LOWLIFES (2024)

Tubi original horror is another in the backwoods cannibal themed horror sub-genre, but with a bit of a twist. A city family (Matthew MacCaull, Elyse Levesque, Amanda Fix and Josh Zaharia) are on an RV vacation and stay the night at the remote farmhouse of a family of locals, the Clearys (Brenna Llewellyn, Cassandra Sawtell, Kevin McNulty and Dayleigh Nelson). As with these flicks, bloody cannibal hijinks soon ensue.

An RV vacation with family that is going to get bloody in Tubi’s Lowlifes.

Flick is directed by Tesh Guttikonda and Mitch Oliver from a script by Al Kaplan. Aside from playing with our expectations and some of the rules of backwoods horror flicks, Lowlifes manages to still be fairly familiar as these kinds of movies go, just from a bit of a different perspective. After some gore in the beginning of the first act, the flick takes quite a while to actually get going again. There are some tedious and dull dialogue scenes in a weak middle until the blood starts to fly once more. One isn’t quite sure if the film is meant to be a comedy as it seems like it’s trying to be darkly humorous, yet the humor doesn’t really start to click till things cut loose in the last act. Once the bloody action finally gets started the film does get vicious and the gruesome last third does deliver the goods and gets quite twisted to boot. It’s city folk vs country family using knives, axes, bow and arrow, shotguns and even kitchen utensils and the gore FX are very well done and quite abundant. Cast are adequate in their roles with pretty Brenna Llewellyn standing out a bit as the resilient Savannah. Definitely worth a look if you are a fan of these flicks. Now streaming free on Tubi.
